Printing management is now being used for all public printing. Users “release” jobs at the printer and cancel any duplicates. A short student-produced video shows how it works. There is no limit on printing currently, but we’re hoping to reduce paper and toner waste.

G+ is now one of Google’s Apps for Education. We can preview premium features for free through the end of the year. Also available: Google Maps are also available (great for customizable & collaborative maps), Google Moderator (vote on ideas) and we are also looking into enabling Fusion Tables (used for very large data sets and visualization).

To simplify communication, the Google group Faculty-Staff Discussion will be combined with Faculty-Staff Announcements on Presidents Day (2/18). Subscribers from Discussion will be added to Announcements.
For virus protection on college-owned Windows computers, we are moving from McAfee to Microsoft SCEP, which is faster, more efficient, and cheaper. More about SCEP.
We will be increasingly use wireless internet connections, rather than wired connections. Where there’s a need, we will continue supporting wired connections, but using wireless as a first option will allow us to cut our network maintenance costs almost in half.
Historic issues of the Wellesley College News, course catalogs, yearbooks, honor’s theses submitted by the Class of 2012, faculty scholarship, and select images from a Petrarch manuscript housed in Special Collections have been added to the Digital Scholarship and Archive. Over 36,000 full-text objects have been download so far.
We have added a second internet connection, and have increased it from 100 to 500MB in case case the main line goes down.
