We are moving from McAfee to Microsoft SCEP* for virus protection on college-owned computers. SCEP scans faster, more effectively, takes up fewer disk resources, and is cheaper. We are asking McAfee users to switch to SCEP by June 1, 2013. The process takes just a few minutes, and the Computing Help Desk will be happy to help you and answer any questions about virus protection.
- College-owned PC: Remove McAfee and install SCEP.
- College-owned Mac: Remove McAfee and install SCEP.
If you installed the College’s version of McAfee on your personally-owned computer, you will also need to remove it:
- Personally-owned PC: Remove McAfee and install Microsoft Security Essentials, the free home-use version of SCEP 2012, or an antivirus product of your choice.
- Personally-owned Mac: CNET has a list of alternatives: http://cnet.co/17mFCf5.
- Remove McAfee by opening the McAfee Security Uninstaller in your Applications folder.
- A Terminal window will open and prompt you to enter the computer’s password (not your domain password). Click into the Terminal window and type the password (you won’t see it appear as you type), then click Enter.
- Wait a few moments for several (about 6) lines of code to appear, telling you the uninstallation was successful. Quit Terminal.
*SCEP = System Center Endpoint Protection (A bulky name for what we’ve heard from users is a very good, easy to use tool)
