From Ravi, CIO & Associate Dean for WellesleyX
Hope you all had a wonderful and productive summer. LTS staff have been working very hard during the summer to get ready for the academic year. As you see below, we are excited to provide a fair amount of good news in the form of improvements to services or new service offerings. I want to remind you that the technologies that we support are not flawless. Technologies often fail, but I want to assure you that we will do everything possible to minimize failures; but more importantly, we will do our absolute best to resolve problems as soon as possible. And remember that if you don’t report problems, we won’t know! Have a great semester…
For Everyone
Poor cell phone reception on campus? WiFi calling is available through Wellesley Secure. Check with your phone carrier to see if if your phone and plan are compatible.
We’ll be conducting an unannounced fake “phishing” expedition. Our exercise will not compromise your account and the results will remain confidential. The purpose is to raise awareness of how important it is to be vigilant of phishing attempts and keep information safe.
We are offering optional Two-Factor Authentication (Duo 2FA) for your Gmail account. The first “factor” is your usual login. The second is a verification sent to your phone — a step hackers won’t have.
We have replaced all wireless access points campus-wide and more than doubled the number previously in Residence Halls, where wireless coverage is stronger and more robust.
Thanks to a successful pilot, all courses that have waitlists will show a red W or a green W in the Course Browser, when logged in. Courses without an indicator do not have a waitlist.
Help people pronounce your name! Go to MyWellesley > Administrivia > For Everyone > Record your name. Recorded student names are added to class lists, and all names are added to the Directory.
Wellesley can provide Adobe software for all College-owned computers, but new faculty and staff office computers have only the most popular tools — Acrobat Pro and Photoshop — pre-installed. If you need additional applications, call the Help Desk to schedule installation.
Wellesley has a new web-conferencing option, Zoom. In addition to WebEx, we now have a two-simultaneous-person license for Zoom, a popular, easy-to-use tool. More info: Kenny Freundlich, x2801 or kfreundl@wellesley.edu.
The Science Library microfilm collection has been relocated to the Clapp Library first floor microfilm room. The microfilm reader is being relocated to this space for viewing convenience.
Introducing Kanopy, a streaming video service with over 26,000 films available, and 500 new titles added each month. Search using the Library Catalog, or directly in Kanopy. Many of the Kanopy collections align with current course materials (e.g., The Criterion Collection), so it replaces the low-use Academic Video Online Premium. Kanopy films can also be shown on-campus outside the classroom. Request DVDs or streaming videos not in Kanopy: Library Purchase Request.

Classrooms
Founders classrooms (except FND 120) received a technology upgrade over the summer. Classrooms now have touch screen controls, a cable/adaptor bundle for plugging in your laptop or mobile device, and wireless projection via AppleTV. Touchscreen How-To Video
Classroom Macintosh computers have been upgraded to OS 10.11 based on Apple’s hardware requirements. Windows computers remain on Windows 7. Classroom software upgrades include Matlab2015b and JMP 12. While the classroom computers remain on their previous versions, Stata 14 and SPSS 23 are now available for download to office computers.
As in previous semesters, older classroom Macintosh computers may take up to a minute for the first login. Subsequent logins are much quicker.
If you want to use clickers for the Fall semester, you may need to share due to the lack of availability of new clickers. Please fill out our clicker request form so we can accommodate as many faculty as possible.
Especially for Students
Office 365 and 2016 are available.
There are now 900+ wireless access points in residence hall rooms. This is more than twice the previous number and represents a shift from hallways to living spaces. Wireless coverage should be stronger and more robust throughout the buildings, contact the Help Desk if you have any issues
Student organizations now have their own Google Accounts for Drive and Gmail, in addition to Google groups already in use, to improve file sharing and communication between incoming and outgoing members.
