By now you have likely experienced Gmail’s new look and feel. Google enabled all the new features so you could give them a try – but if the changes are feeling a bit much, here are a few settings you can adjust to get it to look more like the old Gmail.
- Display Density: This will adjust how much information of each email shows when looking at your list of emails. Click the Settings wheel in the top right, then click Display Density. Compact is pretty close to the old Gmail and doesn’t show all the additional info and buttons for attachments and other things.
The following settings can be adjust under the Settings wheel > General section.
- Smart Compose: When you type in an email, Google will start giving you words and phrases as suggestions. You can turn that off here.
- Nudges: Google‘s AI will bring emails to the top of your Inbox if it feels that you usually replied to them, but haven’t replied to this one. You can turn this off by unchecking the boxes in this section.
- Hover actions: When you move the mouse over emails, Gmail will display various things based on what’s in the email. You can turn this off here.
- Smart Reply: It will give you some suggested replies in buttons at the bottom of emails. You can turn that off here.
- Snippets: Shows a little bit of text beyond the subject line of emails in your list of emails. You can turn that off here so you’ll only see subjects.
