Zoom has released a number of new features recently that are only available if you update your Zoom software.  To see if an update is available for your device, follow these steps.  The latest version of Zoom is version 5.6.4.  Please contact the Help Desk if you need assistance.

Highlights of new features:

  • Raise hand and many more emoji (e.g. faces with various expressions, thumbs up) are now consolidated under Reactions. Participants can also change the skin tone of their hands for thumbs up/down, clapping, high five, etc.
  • Vanishing pen allows you to highlight something on a shared screen and then the annotation gradually fades away.  This will avoid the need to undo or erase the highlighting before moving on to another point in the discussion.
  • Immersive view allows the host to arrange participants within a single virtual background (e.g., a meeting table, picture wall), which will provide the experience of being closer.  Note you must enable this in Accounts > Settings in the Zoom web portal.
  • A blurred background is available (if your device supports virtual backgrounds), if you prefer to not reveal your surroundings while on camera.
  • The Advanced video share option allows you to share a video clip from your computer using Zoom’s video player for improved viewing quality.  Videos play more smoothly and at a higher frame rate, making it easier to watch short clips during a meeting rather than asynchronously.
