Cybersecurity Tip of the Week: Beware of phishing!

Phishing is more nuanced today than ever before. Bad actors can create a sense of urgency and use social engineering to break down your defenses.

  • Impersonation emails are one of the most common phishing scams for faculty and staff.
    • These emails are designed to look like they are from senior administrators and faculty, and often ask for an unreasonably quick turn around from you.
    • Be wary of someone contacting you from a personal email address – these can be very convincing fake email addresses that use someone’s first and last name.
    • This is social engineering at work and these phishing emails are designed to make you feel a sense of urgency to respond without questioning it.
  • Be cautious about opening attachments or downloading files from emails you receive. To confirm whether something is legitimate, reach out to the sender through channels you are familiar with and visit the websites you already know and trust – do not use phone numbers or links provided in the suspicious email.
  • Hover your mouse over links before clicking – you will see a preview of the link’s destination.
  • Double check the sender’s email address — do not trust the Display Name
